Explorer 'main' tank vent leaking
« on: August 09, 2014, 08:06:03 PM »
Quite recently the little vent out of the 'main' tank (in the frame) started leaking.
The hose was too loose and leaked originally, but a bit of safety wire fixed it.
But now the little 90degree metal fitting that goes I or the dummy cap is loose and leaking Badly.
Perhaps it won't leak much when the tank is bolted down and holding it- but I'm not counting on that.

Anyone come up with a good solution?

The only one I can think of is to tap the dummy cap and thread a fitting in- or come up with on that has an O ring on it.

 Any ideas?

I have an idea of how to solve it well.
I think machine an 'O' ring 'groove' in the cap- that should solve it and still allow it to move around.

I installed a short hose with one way valve in the 'upper' tank cap. It leaked out the vent when full as stock,  plus I used an O ring at the bottom of the cap. Seems to work well so far.

I'll report how it works.  (Not much Activity lately, anyone reading these?)

^^ Been too busy working to ride, so haven't been checking in here either. Hopefully we'll get in a few good weeks of riding this fall.

Appreciate the updates and suggestions for the various fixes!

The darn fuel cap fell off today- and I couldn't find it in the brush.

Anyone know the thread size?

I think I'll see if I can find a different type of cap- then use the vent to the lower tank with a 'T' and extended hose vent.
